September 2008 Meeting

Dear Members,

The first meeting for Piney Woods Counseling Association was held this past Tuesday, September 9, at Stephen F. Austin University in Nacogdoches. Stephen F. Austin University and the SFA Counseling and Career Services is always so gracious to host our meeting. We cannot say enough to express our appreciation to them. They not only sponsored the meeting place, but also the counseling center provided the delicious Italian Buffet for lunch and the continental breakfast. We always feel very pampered when we are there.


It was business as usual and led by the 2008-09 President, Cathy Sullivan. One of our valued members, Alice Spacek was recognized as the recipient of "Dr. Jamesanna Kirven Counselor of the Year Award." Thank you, Alice for all you have done for us!

Our speaker, selected by our President-Elect, Janet Adams, did an excellent job. Dr. Susan Adams gave an outstanding presentation on "Ethical Counseling: 'Monday Morning Quarterbacking' Won't Change Saturday Night's Outcome." We always look forward to having Susan with us and she certainly didn't disappoint!

We really appreciate the Executive Committee and all of their hard work. They always meet at 8:00 AM before the general meeting to take care of PWCA business.

Be sure to mark your calendars for the next meeting. It will be held on Tuesday, December 2 at the Longview Regional Medical Center in Longview. Hope to see you there.

March 2008 Meeting

It was great seeing so many people at the Piney Woods meeting at UT-Tyler on March 26th. As usual Molly Behannon presented a wonderful program. She reminded us how important wellness is to each of us as well as to our clients. If you weren’t able to attend, you missed a fun and informative program. Thanks to UT-Tyler for providing the facilities and equipment.



Congratulations to Michael Turpin for being named Piney Woods Counselor of the Year for 2007-2008. It is a well deserved honor!





At our business meeting we elected new officers to lead PWCA through 2008-2009. The new officers are left to right:

Parliamentarian, Leaurme Black; Reporter, Karon Harrison; Secretary, Phil Edwards;
Treasurer, Ruby Revill; President, Cathy Sullivan;
President-elect, Janet Adams; Senator, Madeline Gill (not pictured).

We will be “well-led” by this slate of dedicated professionals. Show them your support next year with your participation and attendance. If you have any ideas for programs or speakers for next year, I’m sure Janet Adams would like to hear from you. You may e-mail your suggestions to jadams@lisd.org
